Radicalized by the Depression, she spent much of the ensuing two decades working aggressively for social change with her husband and stepson, the folksinger Pete Seeger. Collaborating with poet Carl Sandburg on folk song arrangements in the twenties, and with the famous folk-song collectors John and Alan Lomax in the 1930s, she emerged as a central figure in the American folk music revival, issuing several important books of transcriptions and arrangements and pioneering the use of American folk songs in children's music education. But her legacy extends far beyond the cutting edge of modern music. Joining Aaron Copland and Henry Cowell as a key member of the 1920s musical avant-garde, she went on to study with modernist theorist and future husband Charles Seeger, writing her masterpiece, String Quartet 1931, not long after. Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901-1953) is frequently considered the most significant American female composer in this century.

The most religious (Plato, Aeschylus, Virgil) were clearly those on whom I could really feed.” ( Surprised by Joy, 201-202). Even among ancient authors the same paradox was to be found. Spenser and Milton by a strange coincidence had it too. Johnson was one of the few authors whom I felt I could trust utterly curiously enough, he had the same kink. Chesterton had more sense than all the other moderns put together bating, of course, his Christianity. George MacDonald had done more to me than any other writer of course it was a pity he had that bee in his bonnet about Christianity. Indeed, I must have been as blind as a bat not to have seen, long before, the ludicrous contradiction between my theory of life and my actual experiences as a reader. “All the books were beginning to turn against me. The pre-Christian Lewis, however, was besieged not just by the philosophical proofs for the existence of God, but by the spiritually infused worldviews of the writers he most admired. Hidden in this 20 th century tweet is the idea that serious study will bring an intelligent and engaged thinker to a belief in God. “A young man who wishes to remain a sound Atheist cannot be too careful of his reading” ( Surprised by Joy, 182). Lewis’ more famous-or infamous-quotations is this: In fact, such a model awaits them, if only they turn their eyes to their own past . . . to America’s thirtieth president, Calvin Coolidge.Ĭoolidge’s masterful autobiography offers urgent lessons for our age of exploding debt, increasingly centralized power, and fierce partisan division. Today Americans of all backgrounds are on the hunt for a different political model. President Calvin Coolidge on his autobiography “It was my hope to produce a book that would not only have some historical interest, but would be useful for those in public life, in educational work, in preparation for citizenship, and would be especially a book that parents would wish their children to read.” And this knowledge doesn't come from logic but from an individual's own intuition. Transcendentalism means that people have knowledge that goes beyond what their senses can feel. This is a big scary word with a very simple explanation. But not all first contact stories end with an invasion such as Contact by Carl Sagan. Many times in this genre the initial reaction of the general populous to first contact is fear. And that's what the "alien" life is in first contact books. Xenophobia is defined as the fear and mistrust of that which is strange and foreign. The concept may seem far-fetched, but here are two real everyday struggles that First Contact books address. First contact focuses on one of the most fundamental questions posed by science fiction - how would humankind cope with encountering alien life? This question has inspired science fiction’s greatest minds for decades. I really loved Karen, when I met the director. I’d been at home for a month in New Zealand, and after about a week of being back in town, this project came up. McIVER: It actually came in the middle of pilot season, right when I got back to Los Angeles. We knew that the material was so dynamic and could easily fall into melodrama, so we really worked to try to find naturalistic ways of playing it. ROSE McIVER: Aw, thank you so much! I really appreciate that. Check out what she had to say after the jump.Ĭollider: First of all, what a terrific performance in this film, especially with the intense emotion and difficult subject matter that could have easily gone off track. She also talked about what attracted her to The CW series iZombie, getting to explore comedy, the fun of playing this character, and getting to do a brief role in the Veronica Mars web series, Play It Again, Dick. During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Rose McIver talked about how she got involved with the film, taking on the role from Kiernan Shipka ( Mad Men) and then passing it off to the next actress, how much she knew about these books before signing on, the intense ballet training, why it was a bit of a harrowing shoot, breaking the cycle of abuse, and whether she was rooting for characters in such a horrific circumstance. The chapters are really well paced, starting nice and slow to allow the reader to get a gauge of everything that is going without over-facing you with lots of unnecessary jargon and descriptive narrative. Kim Stone is a survivor if ever I saw one and she is so fantastically written, a stereotypical hard-assed woman excelling in a man's world, but with the most wonderful soft side that I hope we see more of the future. I loved the way Marsons wrote this book, there was just enough background about each character to allow the reader to get a really good feel for them and each was a relatable and likeable (obviously apart from the villains but I'm not telling you who they are!). This was my first taste of Marsons' work but it will not be the last, not by a long shot. As she and her team start to investigate the suspicious circumstances, it becomes clear that this isn't going to be an isolated case and they are in a race against the clock to find out who could be next on the killer's hit list and why.Īs an avid reader I just love finding a new talent, whether they are new to the world of publishing or just new to me personally, I love that feeling of knowing I have so much more to look forward to in the future and Angela Marsons is definitely one for me. In Silent Scream, D.I Kim Stone is called to investigate the body found dead in the bath of a house that has been set on fire. Summary: A beautifully written, spine-tingling, thriller that will keep you turning the pages from the first to the last. |
